Biologists may one day be able to use genetic engineering to alter a child's inherited traits. Under what circumstsnces should this be used?

If a biologist were to use genetic engineering in order to avoid a situation where a child gets a life-threatening gene from his/her parents, it would be justified. If biologists could eliminate inherited complications like hemophilia or down-syndrome, childrens' lives would be changed forever.

I I don't think that scientist should do that! Due to the fact that genetics come naturaly and we should accept the traits that are feauture children will have! (:

I think parents should be able to alter traits but only if it is necessary. I don't think parents should change traits just to change them. Parents should only change them if they have a life-threatening disease such as Tay Sachs where they are limited on how long they will live for.

I think that it is appropriate to modify the genes of a child if in the process of changing those genes, they are gettig rid of genes that may cause health problems. Or any genes that are a threat to somone's life.

In my opinion, if scientists can success in a perfect child with all the traits the parents want, who is to say the child will be nurtured right. That child could be raised in a home with parents that will treat the child with respect and looks and apperences will not matter in the slightest, behavior and personalities are not traits or genes.

"Perfection" is society's word for eye candy. It is not the word itself that bothers me, it is the meaning. All our lives we either strive for perfection or we give up and watch the weeds grow. Of course, if we get an opurtunitee to change that we'll change that. That's what the notion of genetically engineered children is for. I am completely against this. There are no pros. Only selfish people would consider this beneficial. Especially since it has not even been tested.

I can see where this would become a good thing, but I can also see it as becoming a bad thing. Yes, there you could stop a child from dying of disease at 8, but what if he/she, because of the altering of their code, died at the age of 1 because somebody missed something important? A person could alter a child in such a way that they become superhuman. This sounds amazing, but what if this child is raised to be a killer??? IT"S INSANITY!!! :P

If biologists were able to use genetic engineering to alter a child's inherited traits, I think they shouldn't unless the child is at risk of having a disease that could hurt them. Biologists should not alter a child's traits because children should be born with their own natural inherited traits and not changed by genetic engineering.

I don't think biologists should genetically alter their children's DNA to fit their parents needs or what talents they want their children to have. If your parents wanted your genes to be good at baseball and they alter it to be good at baseball, they would push you into something that wasn't your choice, instead of letting you discover your own talents :P

I personally think that not even to remove things such as cancer or any bad traits, should we genetically engineer our children's traits. I believe that God makes children the way they are changing them to our delight would be cheating the original ways. As well as there is always the chance of our world being over populated if people are not dying of diseases and etc.

I truly beleive that genetic engeneering should occur only if there are possible health issues with the upcoming baby. Some health issues that could be possible candidates for genetic engeneering would be sickle-cell anemia, down syndrome and cancer.

At one point in our species' future, we may be capable of changing someone's genes before they're born, drastically changing their health, appearance, or abilities. While the applications and usefulness of changing someone's genetics seem desirable, I think the risks and ultimate results of making "perfect children" are many as well.
The positive outcomes of "playing god" are obvious. Because we already know where a lot of disease susceptibilities are on the genome, we could find, delete and replace the genes in the gametes. Things like Tay-Sachs, hemophilia, ADD, premature baldness, color blindness, etc, could be virtually eliminated from the genetic pool. Children could be born healthier, with longer lifespans, higher IQ's, and maybe even less violent. However, if you've ever watched films like GATTACA, the results of a society like this seem gloom and frightening.
This brings me to my next topic, the downside to genetic manipulation. If some particularly wealthy soon-to-be parents ordered their child to be born without any chance of diseases, disorders, or deformities (therefore making them a 'perfect human' in a sense) this could set up social classes and lead to a 'sub-standard human' (like in the movie). Whole future wars, revolutions, riots, and crimes could become of simply attempting to create a human being with a perfect health and brilliant mind.
So my thoughts are that we should set up a list of genetic diseases of which are legal to replace with healthy genes (such as life-threatening cancers, Canavan disease, etc), genetic disorders that are not so life threatening but also detrimental (like mental illness, cleft palate, asthma) which would be legal but very expensive and regulated to change, and finally genetic traits that do not severely effect the child's health (like albinism, polydactyly, green eyes, etc.) could be banned to change in gamete cells. How we exactly draw the line between legal and illegal genes to change I do not know. World-wide voting maybe?
So in conclusion, we could use genetic engineering to prevent or completely eliminate certain diseases, making children's future lives a lot happier. But changing a child to be smarter or have a certain skin tone would be a bit to unnecessary, or unfair to other children. This is why I think we should altogether abandon the idea of genetic engineering in humans and just learn our own genetics to try to prevent what we find undesirable (like knowing our kids might have Tay-Sachs with someone would help). So yeah.
